Jeysie: Random note: From the d20 Modern SRD: "A spellbook can be an actual book or any other information storage device, such as a notebook computer, desktop computer, or PDA (personal data assistant)." Jeysie: There's just something amusing about an electronic spellbook. BLusk: "Yeah, let me boot up my blackberry for some spellcasting study, man..." Jeysie: Well, at least it's something to do on the boring bus trips... BLusk: No, what would be even funnier... have an old spellcaster with spells on different kinds of media... "Level 0 cantrips? Hang on..." *gets out the punch cards and reader* BLusk: "Level 1? OK." *gets out the reel-to-reel* Jeysie: Level 2, 5 1/4 floppy? Jeysie: Level 3 is a zip disk, Level 4 is a CD, and level 5 is a DVD. BLusk: Level 3 is 5.25" high density floppy. Low density 5.25" for 2. Jeysie: Only 5 levels of spells in d20M, you see. BLusk: "Crap! I can't study any spells because my battery just died!" Jeysie: "Hang on, I gotta recharge my spellbook. Damn, knew I should've sprung for the lithium..." Look: I was just looking to see if there was anything interesting going on here. Jeysie: Other than BLusk's amusing thoughts on electronic spellbooks... no. Jeysie: "Back in my day, we stored our spells on tape! Took 2 hours of searching just to spend 15 minutes memorizing the things. AND WE LIKED IT!" BLusk: Punch card spellbook. That's the L0 cantrips. BLusk: I still think I should consider running a D20 modern campaign in the Trinsic World of the future, Jeysie. Jeysie: I like the idea. BLusk: Lunchie, would you like to play a D20 modern character? Guns, knives, explosives, blowing up buildings, etc? Jeysie: Modernized Pelor Temple? Masterson Family Nightclub? The Family? The Mob is eternal. BLusk: Indeed. We could play the exact same scenarios and see how different they are in D20 modern. Look: Depends on the setting I guess. BLusk: Setting = Trinsic's Future. Look: Duh. How *far* in the future? Jeysie: Now-ish, probably Or somewhat Futuristic. Look: How weird would stuff be? BLusk: Modern skyscrapers overlook the once forlorn little tavern of trinsic. Masterson's Bar and Grill has weathered the centuries, updated and renovated and generally managing to survive the ravages of time. Within is William Masterson, great-great-great-great-... etc... Look: As in, how much would it differ from the "real" world? BLusk: Well, there'd be magic, of course. And some advanced technical goodies we don't have. Jeysie: Well, there's rulesets for magic and magical creatures, as well as psionics and divine powers. And good ol' tech, of course. BLusk: Can you imagine Trinsic: History's Future? "We need you to take supplies to Merrytowne." "'K." *cargo plane ride, parachuted packing crates, guys with machine guns* Jeysie: Magical anti-aircraft setups... BLusk: Radio transmitters... Radar arrays... chaff and flare launchers... Crazy bird men with jet packs. Jeysie: With the Pelor "security guard" trained clergy wearing... Kevlar. BLusk: ...and packing holy hand grenades! BLusk: *ssshk* "I've got the Holy Fires of Heck Incendiary Device ready for deployment. Can I get a few Hail Pelors before I chuck it in?" *ssshk* "Hail Pelor!" *ssshk* "BOOM!" Jeysie: Ah. Gotta love a psionic power called "Finger of Fire". Jeysie: Or "Greater Bioweapon". Or the straight-forward and to-the-point "Inflict Pain". Look: Aren't words fun? Jeysie: Spell/power names are always fun. Jeysie: Oh, that reminds me. Jeysie: From the d20 Modern equipment list: "Running Shoes of Striding and Springing" Jeysie: Who needs to make up cheesy item names when the WotC folks do it for you? Jeysie: Or how about the Leather Jacket of Damage Reduction? Jeysie: And then there's the "Duct Tape of Repair". I nearly keeled over laughing when I first read that one. Jeysie: "Chemical Light Stick of Revealing". I've used those before! They're called "glowsticks"... Jeysie: Sadly, there is no standard Holy Hand Grenade. There is a Holy Crossbow and a Handgun of Wounding... Jeysie: And a Keen Chain Saw... Magical Power Tools. Yum. BLusk: Better be battery operated. BLusk: "I'm running out of extension cord!" Jeysie: Windbreaker of Resistance! *pulls on her Windbreaker of Resistance and Running Shoes of Striding and Springing and wields her Flaming Machete and Duct Tape of Repair* Jeysie: I love the WotC naming department. I really do.
